Common Questions

What is ArcGIS for Maritime: Bathymetry?

ArcGIS for Maritime: Bathymetry is an extension to ArcGIS Desktop that allows you to serve and use your bathymetric data for a variety of needs such as creating a single composite bathymetric surface on the fly and visualising multiple surfaces in one frame of reference. The extension also helps you control your hydrographic survey footprints to identify data holdings and see gaps quickly.

Who uses ArcGIS for Maritime: Bathymetry?

ArcGIS for Maritime: Bathymetry is used by several different types of people across many industries and sciences. Data managers, hydrographers, GIS analysts, ocean scientists and surveyors across ports, ocean science, hydrographic offices, maritime defence and offshore energy will take advantage of this technology.

What license level is required for ArcGIS for Maritime: Bathymetry?

ArcGIS for Maritime: Bathymetry requires at least the ArcGIS Desktop Standard license level.

What is the ArcGIS for Maritime: Bathymetry bundle?

The ArcGIS for Maritime: Bathymetry bundle includes:

  • ArcGIS Desktop Standard
  • ArcGIS 3D Analyst Extension
  • ArcGIS for Maritime: Bathymetry

My organisation uses a set of descriptors to catalogue our data holdings. How can I include them in ArcGIS for Maritime: Bathymetry?

You may enter any number of metadata fields to describe your data holdings. You may enter your organisation's data catalogue directly into the BIS and browse or filter your data all conveniently within ArcMap thus greatly enhancing your productivity.

Can the ArcGIS for Maritime: Bathymetry geoprocessing tools be utilised in a script?

Yes, you can plug any of the bathymetry geoprocessing tools into either a stand-alone Python script or utilise them within the ArcGIS Desktop ArcPy window.

How can I organise my data?

You can organise your data using collections (like folders or groups) and by using your own custom metadata for organising the data. This will allow you to easily search and find data.

What type of datasets can I use with ArcGIS for Maritime: Bathymetry?

Both vector (points) and raster data are supported.

What are BAG files and why would I want to use BAGs within the ArcGIS for Maritime: Bathymetry?

BAG or Bathymetric Attributed Grid is a standardised raster format designed specifically for bathymetry. BAGs are rich and self-contained datasets. Inside the same file, BAGs not only store depth data, but they also store uncertainty. So for each pixel, you don't just know the depth of the seafloor, you also have an idea of how much you can trust these depth measurements. BAGs also contain an XML structure of domain specific metadata. ArcGIS for Maritime: Bathymetry supports many raster formats, including BAGs.
